Several traditional bond patterns, or bonds, are commonly used in American brickwork:

  • Running bond – The most common pattern in modern construction, where each brick overlaps the one below by half its length. It creates a clean, continuous look and is ideal for veneer walls.
  • Common bond (American bond) – Features several courses of stretchers (bricks laid lengthwise) followed by a course of headers (bricks laid with the short end facing out). This pattern adds strength and visual rhythm.
